The future of D Night Spot remains uncertain.

The club’s owners, Doney Roy and Eddie Mae Stewart, were supposed to have appeared before the Selma City Council earlier this week.

But they were no-shows because Doney Roy had surgery Monday, according to city attorney Jimmy Nunn.

At issue is the club’s reputation as a site for violence, which came up in in late January at a council meeting.

At that time, Jeanetta Marie Brown said she and her children had to sleep on the floor because of the shooting around their house. She complained the Maxey Street club was the genesis of most of the violence in her neighborhood.

On Monday, Brown said police presence had increased in her neighborhood, but the club still raised some concerns.

However, the shootings have stopped, she said.

Some city officials, including Councilwoman Jannie Venter of Ward 8 raised questions about the club after two incidents that occurred within about three months of one another.

On Thanksgiving night 2007, a Selma man was beaten to death outside the club. Five men were charged in the beating death of Charles DuBose and are awaiting trial. According to testimony during a prelimary hearing of the accused, Dubose pulled a handgun outside the club and fired before five men beat him up.

Then, on Jan. 13, police were called to investigate a stabbing outside the club.

Eddie Mae Stewart has said the club gets blamed for unrelated incidents near there.
