Mail stolen from a postal deliver truck last week has been recovered from a ravine in Autauga County.

An Autauga County road crew, picking up trash along Autauga County Road 1, discovered the mail scattered around its original grey container. One of the workers alerted their supervisor, who called the Autauga County Sheriffs Department on Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday morning, the mail was brought back to Dallas County by sheriff&8217;s investigator Mike Granthum.

Granthum was boxing the recovered pieces believed stolen Feb. 13 from a mail truck. He will turn the mail over to postal inspectors.

Tony Robinson, U.S. Postal inspector, said the first thing they will do is determine if the mail found is from the batch stolen. Even if it&8217;s not, the origin will be traced, and the culprit may face prosecution.

Postal carriers, who deliberately dump mail instead of delivering it, risk prosecution by the Office of Inspector General.

According to witnesses, two suspects broke the window in the postal truck in George Washington Carver Homes, took a carrier bag, and left on foot dropping mail as they fled. Joseph L. Breckenridge, a spokesman for the United States Postal Service, said officials suspected an estimated 500 pieces of mail were taken.

Authorities said they had no idea of knowing if all of the mail was recovered.
