Shots fired Saturday night resulted in a brief standoff in George Washington Carver Homes, causing a stir among the apartment complex residents.

Orlando Walker, 36, a resident of apartment 310-B, was arrested and booked on charges of certain person forbidden to have a firearm after barricading himself in his apartment with three children inside for approximately five to 10 minutes, Selma Police Detective said Frederick Walker, who is not related to the suspect..

“Walker was not permitted to carry a firearm. He was a convicted felon and had an outstanding record,” the detective said.

The suspect has previous felony convictions for illegally carrying a firearm.

Hearing the shots brought residents out of their homes. Small children, teenagers and adults stood around the apartment as police searched the residence of the alleged gunman.

The Selma Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at 7:50 p.m.

An officer arrived on the scene and observed Walker shooting outside.

Det. Walker said at that point, the suspect ran into the house. Det. Walker and other officers arrived on the scene and then told the suspect

to come out several times.

The suspect came out of the house after a few moments and was taken into custody. “He came out with his hands up, and we secured him without incident,” Walker said.

The three children, believed to be the children of Walker’s girlfriend, who also lived in the apartment, were sent to a neighbor’s house after the standoff ended, Walker said.

A large caliber handgun and a box of bullets were secured at the scene.

The size of the gun was not disclosed.

“He did the right thing by coming out of the house. Everything worked out fine,” Walker said. Why Walker fired the shots is still under investigation.

Walker will be held without bond in the Dallas County Jail, pending a bond hearing.
