The Selma Lady Saints captured the 6A Area 5 area title Saturday night at home with a 78-49 win over the Carver Lady Wolverines.

Led by Keisha Moore’s 22-point performance and Ashley Grimes with 21, the Saints march into sub-regional play Feb. 14 with a 29-0 record and a place in Selma High School history.

“It feels good,” Grimes said. “No other girls’ team has ever gone 29-0 at Selma High.”

Grimes couldn’t rest after the game. She had to pick up All-Tournament honors, along with Moore and Richelle Jones.

Moore said now it’s one game at a time. “We’re looking forward to the state tournament,” she said.

Standing in the way will be Robert E. Lee, which fell to Jeff Davis Saturday night. Coach Anthony Harris said he worried a little because coach Michelle Simmons’ squad didn’t allow his team to get into their offensive set.

“We played with a lot of intensity,” Harris said. “We got a little rattled early, but this bunch won’t give up. I’m proud of every one of them.”

With 2:52 to play, leading 72-42, Crystal Turk made a steal in the backcourt and found Moore in the lane lifting the Lady Saints to a 74-42 lead. After that, Harris began to bring the starters to the bench, and ovations came from the crowd.

DeAngela Sword led the Lady Wolverines with 22 points.
