They say a win is a win.

Selma coach Anthony Harris isn’t totally buying that line. The Saints won Thursday night, but they continued a streak of sluggish play.

Even with a 66-30 victory over Stanhope Elmore in the first round of the 6A Area 5 tournament, the Saints have a lot of screws to tighten.

“I don’t know what it is,” Harris said. “We turned the ball over 13 times in the first half, and we probably ended up with 20-something. We’re doing okay, we just need to keep working.”

Selma (28-0) ended the night with 28 turnovers. That hardly mattered due to a Stanhope offense that was anemic throughout the entire game.

The Mustangs (4-13) had ample looks at the basket. However, they scored just 14 points in the first half and trailed by 19. Amanda Deramus led the team with 10 points, and Brianna Fuller scored nine.

Selma began the second half on a 17-4 run and took a 40-18 lead with less than two minutes left in the third. Point guard Kamesha Strong scored five unanswered points to give Selma a 30-point lead midway through the fourth.

Ashley Grimes had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Selma. Strong scored a game-high 14, and Keisha Moore scored 12.

The Saints will play Carver at 7 p.m. on Saturday for the area championship. DeAngela Sword led the Wolverines with 18 points in a 52-42 win over Prattville Thursday.
