Velma Crawford Brown will seek election as a Selma City Council member from Ward 4.

Brown, 55, of 1339 1st Ave. made her announcement Wednesday afternoon. She has run twice before and lost by 200 votes.

The incumbent, Dr. Geraldine Allen, recently said she would run for council president. Allen&8217;s decision leaves the position open. Qualifying begins July 1 and ends July 15.

The municipal elections are set for Aug. 26, and the winners will be seated Nov. 3.

Brown decided to run this year because she wants to be a driving force behind cleaning up the city, keeping areas drug free and finding activities for young people to do in the city.

Brown is the only candidate in Ward 4 who has announced.

A Selma native, Brown graduated from Concordia College with a degree in elementary education. She commuted for 25 years as a state worker to correctional facilities in Montgomery and Birmingham.

Brown is a member of Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church, the alabama Correctional Association, the Peace Officer Association, the Alabama State employees Association and is a partner with Payne Elementary School.

Brown has a son and a daughter, both who serve in the military.
