Terence Benson dropped in 35 points, including eight 3-pointers, to lead Southern Union to a 72-59 win over Wallace-Selma.

The Patriots briefly led 20-19 at the 10:35 mark of the first half, but Southern scored five straight points and didn’t relinquish its lead the rest of the contest.

Wallace trailed 37-33 at halftime. Alfred Smith helped with four 3-pointers for 12 points.

With 3:50 left to play, the Bisons went up by 13 for a little breathing room and held on for the win.

The loss drops the Patriots to 1-4 in their division. Smith finished with 18 points and four assists. Michael Acoff added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Women

The Wallace Community College Lady Patriots fell short 77-70 to the Southern Union Lady Bisons.

Wallace scratched its way through the first half to keep the game close, trailing 31-25 at the break. Two turnovers and two mental lapses allowed Southern go up by 15 points early in the second half.

Crystal Walker came off the bench with three straight buckets, helping Wallace to get back within five points.

The Lady Bisons countered with four straight 3-pointers to pull to a 15-point advantage.

Shawnese Armistead led four Lady Patriots in double figures with 15 points. Kashara Moore netted 14 points, Daphne Green dropped in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sivon Pugh finished with 10 points, five assists and four steals.
