Like a prizefighter that gets better as the rounds go by, the Selma girls’ basketball team made up for lost time in every quarter Thursday night.

Selma made a big Southside rally in the first quarter an afterthought and protected its No. 5 ranking by rolling to a 75-40 win.

The Panthers fell behind 14-0, but after a quick timeout got their heads back in the game.

Kierra Miles scored on a breakaway to start a 13-2 run that cut Selma’s lead to 24-23 with two minutes left in the first.

Selma ended the quarter with a 28-25 lead but quickly went on a stretch that broke the game open.

A 14-4 run over the first six minutes of the second put the Saints ahead 42-29.

Keisha Moore led all scorers with 35 points and popped a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the half. That put Selma ahead 57-37, and Southside never was able to recover.

The Panthers scored just one field goal in the fourth quarter and were scoreless for more than three minutes to start the period.

Lateasha Witherspoon had eight points and seven rebounds for Selma, and Crystal Turk also scored eight.

Shanequa Williams led Southside with nine points, followed by Kelsey Brown with seven.
