Hisel announces he will run for city council president

Gene Hisel has announced his intention to run for office as Selma City Council president.

Hisel made the announcement in a statement released Tuesday to The Selma Times-Journal.

Four years ago, the Selma businessman ran for mayor. He&8217;s generally known among his friends as an outspoken person. He seeks a seat that will be vacated by the incumbent, George Evans. On Tuesday, Evans, who has served as president of the city council for nearly eight years, announced his intention to run for mayor.

Hisel moved to Selma in 1968. He has a degree in applied science criminal justice and has run a business in the city for more than a quarter-century.

Hisel spent eight years in the Air Force, including one year of service in Vietnam. He has been awarded honors 31 times in the Air Force, earning an honorable discharge.

The election is set for August.
