Ebony Fashion Fair celebrates 50 years

Ebony Fashion Fair, the world largest traveling fashion show, will celebrate its 50th year, and Selma is fortunate enough to be a part of it.

This year&8217;s show &8220;Glam Odyssey: A Fashion Journey into Bliss and Beyond,&8221; will be held at 8 p.m. at the J.A. Pickard Auditorium.

This is the 30th year the show has come to Selma.

Sponsored by the Zeta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., proceeds from the event will benefit the organization&8217;s local scholarship fund. Scholarships are awarded to students in Dallas, Perry, Wilcox and Lowdes counties.

Tickets are on sale now &8212;

$25, adult and $21 student &8212; and can be purchased from sorority members or at the door the night of the show.

A reception will follow the show at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center. The models from the show will be in attendance.

Each ticket includes a choice of a one-year subscription to EBONY magazine or a six-month subscription to JET magazine.

Several door prizes will be given away, including a chance to win round-trip air transportation for two to any destination served by American Airlines or American Eagle in the domestic U.S. 49 states, a 2008 Ford Edge by Ford Motor Co., Fashion Fair cosmetics, and a number of prizes provided by local vendors.

The glamourous fashion show makes appearances in over 175 cities during its annual tour of the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean.

Saying that the show draws a crowd is an understatment, as the coveted seats are sure to be filled each year.

Selma is proud to claim the producer and director of Ebony Fashion Fair, Eunice Walker Johnson, who was born here in the Queen City.

She received her high school education here, as well as a certificate in sewing and tailoring.
