Francis Marion took advantage of Southside’s faltering offense down the stretch and won 58-50.
Southside led 45-41 at the end of the third quarter, but that was before Jerome Smith got his offense going.
He hit a 3-pointer and a breakaway layup on the front end of an 11-3 run that gave the Rams a 52-46 lead with 2:45 left in the game.
Deadrian Williams tipped in a missed free throw, and Kenneth Tabb scored on a fast break to ice the game for the Rams. Smith led Marion with 17 points, Williams had 16 and Tabb had 10.
Jerel Peoples streaked down the floor for a dunk and Marcus Cleveland hit a layup with 5 minutes left in the third to give Southside its biggest lead of the game, 39-28. But Marion even had answer for that, scoring 8 of the game’s next 11 points.
