Services for former Marion Mayor Royal Leigh Pegues, who died Thursday, Dec. 13, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at Siloam Baptist Church in Marion, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in Marion City Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Home directing.

Pegues, who served two terms as Marion mayor in the 1960s, was active in Alabama politics as well. From 1975-1983 he represented the 86th District of Dallas, Marengo and Perry Counties in the state Legislature. During that period of service he was instrumental in securing funding necessary to make Cahawba, Alabama&8217;s first permanent capital, a state park.

Pegues was a veteran of World War II, and a 1948 graduate of Marion Military Institute, where he later coached the Varsity team. In 1950 he graduated from the University of Alabama and for several decades was the business manager for Judson College. He was a former trustee of both Marion Institute and Judson College.

His further involvement in Alabama included serving as a Director of Alabama Department of Environmental Manager, and as an emeritus trustee at The University of West Alabama.
