NEWBERN – R.C. Hatch coach Homer Davis said if his team can start winning on the road, it would be all right.
The Bobcats (7-1) obviously got the message, taking a 76-67 win Friday over Sunshine.
“Demarcus Porter, our point guard, and Rodney Scott, our 3, played football, so it’s taken them some games to get in basketball condition,” Davis said. “They’re there now, and they’re doing a good job for us. Rodney played in Frankie’s (Sullivan) shadow for the past two years, now he’s getting his chance to start. When they double team and play Box-and-1 on Frankie, Rodney is there to give us a lift when we need it.”
Porter, who averages nearly five rebounds per game, scored 15 points and had seven rebounds. Sullivan led all scorers with 33 points and also had seven rebounds and six steals. Brandon Battle had eight points and eight rebounds.
Royce Hamilton led Sunshine with 24 points, and both Justin Wagner and Marcus Lee had 16.
The Bobcats had a big third quarter in the ball game. They pulled away from a four-point halftime lead and outscored the Tigers 21-8 to go ahead 52-35.
Sunshine answered with a big fourth, but Hatch held on for the win.
Hatch doesn’t have to worry about being road warriors in the near future. They play two games this week at home, where they have a 16-game winning streak dating back to the start of last season.
