It began looking doubtful that Selma would get things rolling against winless Stanhope Elmore Tuesday night.

The Mustangs (0-4) cut Selma’s lead to nine at the end of the second quarter after trailing by double digits for most of the first half.

Center Wendell Lewis took over and scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half to lead the Saints (6-1) to a 67-46 win.

Corwin Reeves scored 11 to lead the Mustangs, but an anemic third quarter from Stanhope allowed Selma to handily take control of the game.

The Saints outscored the Mustangs 19-9, pulling away with a lead that had dwindled to seven at one point.

Selma went on a 12-2 run in the first quarter to go ahead 16-6, but sloppy play led to missed shots and turnovers.

An 8-4 Stanhope run that ended on a Trey Lewis breakaway dunk put the team down 30-21 at the half. Reeves hit a pair of free throws to cut Selma’s lead to 32-25 with 6:31 left in the third.

Then Lewis became active in the paint and sparked Selma’s offense. The Saints went on an 8-0 run to go ahead 46-27 with 1:53 left in the third and never looked back.

Jakobe Shannon added 10 points for Selma, and Demario Ross had nine.
