Dr. Kenneth Oliver told members of the Selma City Board of Education he was from Dallas County and he wanted the job.

Oliver was the final applicant to interview last week for the vacancy of superintendent, and he said they saved the best for last. Oliver, a native of Dallas County, is the principal of Booker T. Washington High School in Macon County.

School officials said they hope to have a new superintendent in place after the first of the year. Oliver was one of five finalists. One candidate withdrew. Oliver and three others interviewed last Wednesday in an open forum.

Oliver, 42, delivered a PowerPoint presentation during his 15-minute opening presentation then talked specifics when asked questions.

It outlined several of the goals of Selma City Schools, and showed how he would enhance them.

During his presentation Oliver called for the establishment of an advisory committee consisting of parents, community and business leaders who would meet monthly. He applauded the Early College High School, but said it too could be enhanced to include vocational studies.

Oliver, who has been in education for 21 years, has spent the past 11 as an administrator. He said he helped pull Booker To Washington High out of improvement status making Adequate Yearly Progress.
