Shawnese Armistead got hot at just the right time for the Wallace Community College-Selma women Saturday night.

The guard scored 16 of her game-high 27 points in the final eight minutes and led the Patriots to an 88-79 win over Lawson State Community College. Keshara Moore scored 16 points, and Sivon Pugh scored 14 for Wallace.

Armistead had her number called on consecutive plays and hit back-to-back 3-pointers. They were two of four total 3-pointers in the middle of a 14-4 run that gave WCCS an 84-70 lead with 2:39 left.

Lawson got within seven points after a 7-0 run cut the lead to 84-77 with a minute left, but that’s all the Cougars got.

A pair of free throws from Heather Wilson and a steal and breakaway layup from Armistead sealed the game.

Nekia Hicks led Lawson with 19 points, Tearra Henderson scored 18 and they nearly gave the Cougars control of the game in the second half.

Hicks hit a 3 to cut the Patriots’ lead to 59-57 nearly seven minutes in, but WCCS answered with a 7-0 run.

Brittany Rittenberry ended a 7-0 Lawson stretch with a layup, and they trailed 68-66 with 8:34 on the clock.

Lawson’s biggest lead of the game came when it was ahead 15-7 in the first half.
