Mrs. Doris McCarty

Mrs. Doris McCarty, 88, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007.

She was a lifelong resident of Alabama, who was born in Thomasville in 1919. Mrs. McCarty was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Selma.

Her husband, Lewis Raymond McCarty; a brother, Guy Sellers, and a sister, Mildred Mitchell, survive her. Guy Sellers has one son named Ronnie Sellers. Mildred Mitchell has two daughters, Elaine Harris and Jean Payne. Tom Warren is a nephew of Mrs. McCarty. Mr. and Mrs. McCarty had a daughter, Lovie Deloris McCarty. Lovie Deloris McCarty had two sons, Joseph Franklin Marlar Jr. and James Michael Marlar. Joseph Franklin Marlar Jr. is married to Brenda Blevins Marlar. They have two children, Stephen Blake Mount and Joseph Franklin Marlar III. James Michael Marlar is married to Jennifer Hill Marlar. They have a daughter, Lilly Grace Marlar.

A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the New Live Oak Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors at the Lawrence Brown Funeral Home 10 a.m., Wednesday.

Mr. William Davis

Mr. William Davis, 81, of Selma, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at the local hospital.

Graveside services will be Friday at Pineview Memory Gardens with Bro. Jack Deeman officiating under the direction of Moor Chapel Funeral home.

Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at Miller’s Funeral Home.

Mrs. Frances &8216;Polly’ Mitchell Perry

Mrs. Frances &8220;Polly&8221; Mitchell Perry, 76, of Selma died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007.

She was a lifelong member of Elkdale Baptist Church. Her greatest joy in life was the happiness and success of her family. They love her and will miss her.

Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by her first beloved husband of 31 years, Charles Ben Mitchell; her parents, William and Ida V. Harrison and a stepson, Ray Perry of Selma.

She is survived by her spouse, L.J. Perry of Selma; four daughters, Linda Mitchell Irwin and husband Edward Paulk of Prattville; Sandra F. Mitchell of Selma, Connie Mitchell Weaver and her husband David of Birmingham and Melissa Mitchell Kenan and her husband Jim of Birmingham; three stepdaughters, Mary Frances Keyes and her husband Roy of Petal, Miss., Linda Booker and her husband Wayne of Port Neches, Texas, and Gail Smitherman and her husband Marvin of Selma; a brother, Billy Harrison and his wife Katie of Sprott; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Elkdale Baptist Church under the direction of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. at Elkdale Baptist Church.

Richard &8216;Dick’ Smith Bean

Richard &8220;Dick&8221; Smith Bean, gifted leader, storyteller and friend died on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007.

He was born Dec. 8, 1923, graduated from East High School in Sioux City, Iowa and enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving four years during World War II. He served in China Burma and Indian theaters.

He graduated from Boston University in 1950 with a bachelor’s in communication and received a Master’s in Education in 1972 from Montevallo.

After serving the Air Force, the Air Reserve and Air National Guard, he retired from the Air National Guard in Decemeber 1983 at the rank of master sergeant with many awards, including an Air Force commendation received for teaching a technical writing course that was required for all ranks from staff sergeant through general.

He worked tirelessly in Selma since settling here in 1966 after being stationed at Craig Air Force base. He was a past member of the Selma City School Board. He was the incorporator and first administrator of the Old Depot Museum. He was one of the first driver education teachers for Dallas County High schools. He was treasurer and a Sunday school teacher at Westwood Baptist Church, where he had been a member since 1983. He served on the E-911 board from 1988 through 2002.

Mr. Bean has left behind a legacy for his family and the city of Selma. He was a wonderful man, always sharing his time, a joke and a handshake for anyone in his path. He taught us the importance of hard work family. He is loved and will be missed.

Mr. Bean was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Frank Bean and Lois Smith Bean and his daughter, Katherine.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Charlene Bean; his sister, Jo Peterson of Bozeman, Mont. and four children, Kristina Whaley and her husband, Tom, Shirley Ross, Karen Robertson and her husband Mark and Frank Bean and his wife Nancy; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, at Westwood Baptist Church under the direction of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home.

Visitation is 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for Westwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 4085 U.S. 80 W., Selma, AL 36701.

Ms. Bettie Page Ervin

Ms. Bettie Jean Page Ervin died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007.

She was born Aug. 24, 1943.

Services will be

noon, Saturday, at Town Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Tyler with Pastor P.E. Bonner officiating.

Burial will be at Town Creek Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of Walker Mortuary.

Repast will be at Town Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
