After a slow start, the Saints held the Yellow Jackets to 17 points in the second half.

“Tonight we were a little bit sluggish to begin with,” coach Anthony Harris said. “Then we played good defense, and they came around. We need a couple of post people to step up for us. If we can get two to score double figures and average seven or eight rebounds a game, we’ll be okay down the stretch.”

Selma led by seven going into halftime, but outscored Aliceville 18-9 in the third quarter to get some breathing room.

The win came on the heels of a 72-44 victory Selma took over Keith in its home opener Friday.

Moore had 13 points and seven steals, and Lateasha Witherspoon had nine points and eight rebounds. Gabrielle Goudy scored 11, and both Ashley Grimes and Strong scored 10. Grimes also had seven rebounds and six assists.

Keith-John Essex

The Keith girls bounced back from two straight losses to beat John Essex 62-25 in the Greene County Classic Saturday.

Shauntay Gooden led the Bears (2-2) with 16 points, and Alexus Young scored 14 for Keith, who held a 52-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.

“We played sub-par basketball for the first three games,” Keith coach Tommy Tisdale said. “We hadn’t played our style of basketball since the first half of the season opener. We got back to basics and stopped rushing so much.”

Anjelica Dukes added 10 points for Keith, and Carneshia Jackson had eight.
