The issue: Revitalizing downtown

Our take: So many things are happening downtown these days.

The Freedom Foundation is renovating a building in the heart of the downtown area. That work is coming along.

An interpretive center is about to go in the building hull on Water Avenue and Broad Street near the bridge. A chunk of change for that building’s rehabilitation came from Washington.

The ArtsRevive group is looking at another downtown building to take over and attract folks to come see the arts up close and personal. We hope they’ll take a cue from the folks over in Alexandria, La., which did something similar many years ago, and leave space for some studios to lease to area artists.

It’s nice to be a part of the downtown community.

We’d like to make a suggestion, though.

So many cities are rehabbing their buildings with commercial or office space on the bottom floors and a loft on an upper floor.

We’d like to see an expansion of downtown with loft space. After all, rentals are sparse here in the city.

There’s a market for some quality loft apartments within walking space to our library, shops, restaurants and stores.

Our downtown is precious.

We’re glad to see some things happening here.
