Winning a conference championship was cake for Concordia.

Beating Miles College in the season finale would be the icing, and the Hornets can’t wait to get a full taste of that dessert.

“The bottom line is I’m going home, we’re going to have fun and win this last game,” Concordia coach Shepherd Skanes said. “They’re looking for this victory to end on a positive note and get ready for next season, and we’re looking to do the same.”

The Bears and Hornets have both had their share of struggles this year.

Concordia (2-8) got some redemption when a tiebreaker gave them the South East Athletic Conference Championship.

But Miles (1-9) – playing at home for what is also its season ender – won’t care about that.

“They’ve struggled with everybody until they play Concordia,” Skanes said. “Everybody wants to play their best game when they play Concordia because nobody wants us to beat them.”

The Hornets achieved a milestone last week that went beyond numbers, according to Skanes.

Even though they lost to Edward Waters, it was one of the few times this year when things came together and worked in Concordia’s favor.

“I think we played together as a team Saturday,” he said. “We were able to overcome adversity and make it a game with a chance of winning in the end.”
