PLANTERSVILLE – Selma had to get a little dirt under its fingernails before it got out of Martin Field with a win Friday.

The Saints (5-5) were leading by 22 going into the fourth quarter but barely got by Dallas County with a 42-34 win.

A touchdown catch by Andrew Mahan sparked the offense for the Hornets (1-9), who benefited from a pair of inadvertent whistles in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Selma turned the ball over on both possessions, leading to a pair of DCHS touchdowns.

The Hornets came down from a 42-20 deficit to make it a ball game in the final three minutes.

Selma coach Brian Montgomery used the last game of the season to experiment with his offense and get next year’s quarterbacks some playing time.

He even lined fullback Justin Moorer-Jones up under center.

“We’re a growing team,” Montgomery said. “We made some steps, and we’re definitely better this year than we were last year. I think the leadership is going to be stronger next year. I’m only losing one offensive lineman, and we’re in excellent shape at the quarterback position.”
