A 16-year-old facing murder charges in the June shooting of a security guard claims he’s insane.

Demarion Pullom entered his plea Tuesday. He’s one of two teenagers charged in the death of Steven James Aguero, 35, who worked for Globe Security.

Judge Tommy Jones accepted the plea of Pullom and his 18-year-old cousin Corey Pullom. The two appeared in court Tuesday with their attorney, Bruce Maddox, of Montgomery.

Prosecutors want the court to certify the two youths as adults. But Maddox has asked Jones to consider youthful offender status for the 18-year-old. Jones took the request under advisement, Maddox said.

Jones denied their attorney’s request to lower bail.

Demarion remains jailed on $500,000 bond and Corey’s bail is $300,000.

The killing occurred in the parking lot of Jim Minor Garden Homes in Selmont. Aguero lived in the complex. He had called

police before 10 p.m. the night of June 4 to report two young women fighting. Police arrived and arrested a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old female.

Shortly after the arrests, Aguero called police again to report he was under attack. Police returned. As they took a statement from Aguero, the guard was felled by gunshots to the chest.

Selma police Sgt. Tommy Webber was standing beside Aguero and was forced to take cover behind his patrol car. Webber was not injured.

Following the incident Selma’s elected officials held a news conference speaking out against the incident, saying such disregard for law enforcement as &8220;unacceptable.&8221;
