Maplesville wins war of Devils

MAPLESVILLE – The Devils burned the Devils last night as Maplesville won 51-8 against Verbena.

Maplesville’s Nick Andrews returned an interception for a 47-yard touchdown to make it a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Maplesville started what would be the beginning of a scoring streak. Brad Pike ran an 8-yard touchdown and a few minutes later, quarterback Marcus Wilson ran in another short touchdown.

Brian Frith almost got in on the scoring when he picked up a fumble for a 48-yard run, but Pike scored the touchdown from 1 yard out, and Maplesville led 28-0.

As the end of the second quarter neared, Wilson threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Andrews. With only a few minutes left on the clock in the second half, Andrews kicked a 30-yard field goal, ending the second half at 37-0.

The third quarter was a little less active as Wilson threw a pass to Frith for a 22-yard touchdown to make it 44-0.

The fourth quarter began with Maplesville recovering a fumble, and James Madsen made it count with a 4-yard touchdown.

With only 1:22 seconds left on the clock, Kelly Lucas scored Verbena’s first and only touchdown for the night. With one minute left, they ran a two-point conversion that was good, bringing the score to a halt at 51-8.

Verbena’s Spencer Moore had seven solo tackles, and Tyler Kelley had eight tackles with one interception.

For Maplesville, Pike had 50 rushing yards, Wilson had 45 rushing yards and Andrews had 59 receiving yards.
