Birmingham mayor to speak in Selma

Birmingham mayor-elect Larry Langford is scheduled to be in Selma this week, addressing the Jonathan Daniels Community Development Corporation during its annual banquet on Friday at Wallace Community College-Selma.

Langford is slated to present the keynote address during the Hope and Unity Banquet.

The theme for this year is &8220;Rebuilding our Communities from the Inside.&8221;

Langford was elected to the Jefferson County Commission as a Commissioner in June 2002, and re-elected for a second term in 2006. He oversees the Department of Health and Human Services.

Langford won numerous awards for revitalizing the City of Fairfield where he served as mayor for 14 years.

During his tenure he founded the VisionLand Family Theme Park, now known as Alabama Adventure.

Langford is a graduate of Parker High School, Lawson State Community College, and the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Miles College and completed studies at Harvard University in Public Policy.

Kendrick said that organizations, businesses, financial institutions, as well as individuals are expected to attend this year’s banquet.

&8220;As this year’s theme suggests our community shares a common interest in stabilizing and rebuilding our neighborhoods&8221; Kendrick stated.

Dr. Geraldine Allen, vice chair of the JDCDC, said as a long-standing board member and past chairperson, to be involved with the continuous growth and achievement of the organization &8220;has been an honor.&8221;

The Jonathan Daniels CDC is a non profit organization providing services in affordable

housing, home buying education, financial literacy education, credit and debt counseling, asset and wealth education, micro enterprise development, community leadership and neighborhood safety.
