Post office service not up to par

To the Editor:

On Wednesday, Oct. 10 at between 10 and 10:30 a.m., my elderly mother went to the post office to mail a package to her sponsored child in Guatemala as she has done many times before.

But on this day the clerk on duty was very rude and hateful. She told my mother that her handwriting on the label was not readable and asked my mother to buy a postal label from the post office.

She was not satisfied with the 2nd label so my mother had to buy yet another label to mail the package. Is this how the post office sell their products? My mother’s handwriting is much better than my handwriting and I have never had any problems with mailing anything.

My mother was forced to buy the same product twice to mail her package and the price of mailing the package was around twice the usual mailing rate that she paid many times before when mailing to Guatemala.

Historically, the post office has been very helpful when someone had a problem mailing a package and it is my hope that the local postmaster will reconcile this situation soon. I hope to contact him soon.

I think this kind of behavior by someone who is put in the trust of serving the public at taxpayer’s expense is unacceptable and I hope the local postmaster will feel the same way.

Thanks for publishing this letter.
