Friday’s matches begin at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday kicks off at 8 a.m. The match is for singles and doubles players of all ages.

“They probably had tennis tournaments here years ago, but since I’ve been here this is the first one for me,” Vaughan tennis director Tameka Little said. “We want to do a quarterly tennis tournament because no other teams here have tennis courts. We’ve got a lot of people here who play tennis on a regular basis.”

This is a non-sanctioned, novice tournament for men and women and children.

According to Little, the biggest draw for older players has to be the courts’ surface.

“We have clay courts, which are better on your knees,” she said.

The sport, which promotes activity and heart healthiness, is one more thing the center is doing to fight obesity and its many health risks.

It also serves to support the growing interest in the game.

“It’s a great sport,” Little said. “We want people to know what we have to offer as far as indoor vs. outdoor courts. We have a fair amount of tennis players in the city. There are a lot of high school players as well as people in the community.”

Trophies will be awarded to tournament winners. The entry fee is $15 for singles and $25 for doubles. For more information, contact Little at 875-7500.
