Patriots come from behind, win 68-61

In a come from behind win the Wallace Community College Patriots won their second game of the season on Monday night over the Lawson State Community College Cougars, 68-61.
“I am excited about this win but I am not excited about our 2-6 record,” said Patriots Coach Johnnie McCalpine.
“This win doesn’t take away the games we have lost.
We are not focusing on this win but on the next game.”
The first half was almost like dj vu for the Patriots.
The Cougars hit seven baskets from outside the arc, four of which came from Jermale Jones.
The Patriots won the opening tip-off and Brandon Thomas put three points on the board.
With just over 16 minutes left to play in the first, Demetrius Coates sunk a three point basket which was answered with a three point basket from Phillip Johnson and the score was tied at seven.
The Cougars pulled ahead over the Patriots and were up 21-14 with just over ten minutes left on the clock.
Thomas hit two three point baskets back to back to cut into the Cougars lead.
The Patriots were able to cut the lead to two but the Cougars pushed ahead and were leading 40-32 at the half.
The second half opened with a dunk from the Patriots Deon President. The Cougars, who were on fire from behind the arc in the first half, went cold in the second hitting just one three point basket.
With just over six minutes left on the clock Doug Murray hit a three to tie the game at 56.
Thomas scored eighteen of his twenty one points in the second to help the Patriots take the lead away from the Cougars.
The Patriots were perfect from the free throw line in the last four minutes of the game hitting six of six.
The Cougars turned the ball over several times and were unable to retake the lead.
Doug Murray had 12 points and 2 rebounds for the Patriots.
Deon President added 8 points and 6 rebounds.
Brandon Hampton led the Cougars with 14 points and 9 rebounds.
Jermale Jones followed with 12 points and 2 rebounds.
Demetrius Coates added 9 points.
Wallace will face Meridian Community College on Friday, Dec.
15
at home.
