Mr. David Dykes, Sr.

Mr. David Dykes, Sr., age 57, of Jamacia, New York, formerly of Coatopa, Alabama, passed away on July 17, 2006 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Public viewing and visitation will be held on Sunday, July 23, 2006 from 11:00 to 12:00 noon at Larkin & Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Demopolis, Alabama. Interment with military honors will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coatopa, Alabama. Larkin & Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis, Alabama entrusted with arrangements.

John Smith, Jr.

John Smith, Jr., age 44, of Minter, Alabama died on July 19, 2006 at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Funeral services will be announced later by Miller Funeral Service.

Willie Mitchell

Willie Mitchell, age 71, of Selma, Alabama died on July 17, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, July 24, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include: one brother, L.D. Mitchell; one uncle, David Brantley of Cincinnati, Ohio; one aunt, Minnie Leshore of Selma, Alabama; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Jeff Waiters

Mr. Jeff Waiters, age 44, of Demopolis, Alabama, passed away on July 17, 2006 at Bryan Whitfield Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Evening Star Baptist Church in Forkland, Alabama. Rev. Willie Carter, Pastor and Rev. Patrick Simmons will officiate. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The remains will repose at the church on Saturday beginning at 12:00 noon. Julius (PeeWee) Lee Shields

Julius (PeeWee) Lee Shields, age 72, of Selma, Alabama. died on July 14, 2006 at Warren Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at New Shady Grove M.P. with Rev. B.A. Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Sondridge Cemetery with Miller Funeral Service directing.

Survivors include: his wife, Salie Shields; two sons, Julius Shields, Jr. of New York and Herman Peoples of Huntsville, AL.; four daughters, Gwendolyn Tynes, Cora Eaton, Jewel Hamlor, all of New York and Jewel Denise Brown of Selma; one brothers, Johnny Shields of Birmingham; two sisters, Eartha Knights and Mary Ann Shields of Philadelphia, PA.; seventeen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sons-in-laws; three brothers-in-laws; two sisters-in-laws; and a host of nieces and nephews. including five special nieces, Elvira Cooper, Cora Haywood, Bobbie Cooper, Joanne Rowe and Mary Shaw; and two special nephews, George Cooper, Jr. and Julius Cooper. Also surviving is a host of other relatives and friends.

Myrtis Wilson Long

Graveside funeral services for Myrtis Wilson Long, 94, of O’Fallon, Illinois, formerly of Selma will be held Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 11:00 at New Live Oak Cemetery. Mrs. Long was born on July 27, 1911 and died on July 18, 2006 in O’Fallon.

She was a member of Barrett Road United Methodist Church and Dallas Chapter #184 Order of the Eastern Star.

She owned and operated Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio in Selma for many years prior to her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, William R. Long, Sr. in 1974. Mrs. Long is survived by her sons, William R. (Betty) Long, Jr., of O’Fallon, Illinois, and Glenn W. (Anne) Long of Auburn, Alabama; grandchildren,

Glenn W. (Jannie) Long, Jr., of Vero Beach, Florida, William Allen (Gelsomina) Long of Duluth, Georgia, Raymond W. (Ina) Long of Cullma, Alabama and Mary Catherine (Geoffrey) Coleman of O’Fallon, Illinois. Mrs. Long has seven great grandchildren, Amanda S. Long, Robert F. Long, Jessica A. Long, Samuel W. Long, Walker N. Long, Sarah M. Long, and Keegan P. Coleman. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Opal Wilson of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and a number of nieces and nephews.

David Glenn Nelson, Jr.

Mr. David Glenn Nelson, Jr., 51, of Montgomery, AL, formerly of Selma, AL, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, the late Elsie Johnson, his mother, the late Jessie Clark, his stepfather, the late Edgar Clark, and his brother, the late John “Roy” Johnson. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of thirty-three years, Linda Faye Dickerson Nelson, his two sons, David Nelson, III and Michael Nelson. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Lester (Winifred) Phillips, his brother, Ellis Johnson, four sisters-in-law, Loretta Johnson, Aurelia Hasty, Georgia Stovall, and Clora Ann (William) Patterson, as well a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. David Nelson committed his life to Christ at an early age and was a longtime member of the Northern Heights Presbyterian Church of Selma, Alabama. Recently, he affiliated with Saint Paul A.M.E. Church of Montgomery, Alabama. Mr. Nelson was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for over twenty-five years. Upon his retirement from the postal service, he was employed by Don Terry and Associates, where he faithfully served as a security officer for approximately two years.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006, at 1:00 p.m., at Saint Paul A.M.E. Church of Montgomery, Alabama, with Pastor Joseph Rembert, Sr., officiating and Ross-Clayton Funeral Home directing. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services.

Elsa M. Barkley

Elsa M. Prevo Barkley, 72, of Selma, died July 16, 2006. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Providence M.P. Church. Burial will follow in White Cemetery with J.H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home directing.

Ethel McKellar Williams Mahorn

Ethel McKellar Williams Mahorn was born on June 7, 1901 in Thomasville, Alabama (Clark County), the oldest child to the late John and Joanah Stallworth McKellar.

She received her formal educational training within Thomasville, Ala (Clark County) Public School System.

Upon completing her formal education training in Clark County, she continued her academic pursuit of high learning at Selma and Alabama State Universities, where she received a degree in Elementary Childhood Education.

After college, she was hired as a teacher and served in the capacity of principal for Dallas County and Clark County Public School Systems. Mrs. Ethel McKellar Williams Mahorn served Dallas County Public School System for over 43 years as a stellar educator. Her commitment was to inspire and motivate students to achieve academic excellence within the classroom. As a result she received many tributes and honor for scholastic accomplishments from the Retired Teachers Associations and Alabama Education Association.

Moreover, she was the recipient of the “Centurion Awards” from President George Bush and Governor Riley.

She was married to the late Bishop Williams for 28 years and to that union came seven (7) children. Sixteen (16) years later she would join in another marriage union with Mr. Charlie Mahorn for 28 years until his death on March 2, 1997.

Ms. Ethel McKellar Williams Mahorn is a member of Mount Olive #2 Missionary Baptist Church where she remained committed for approximately seventy (70) years up until her death. She served as a Sunday School Teacher for the adult class and President of the Missionary Society. She was a devout believer of Jesus Christ and she loved her church family, Mt. Olive #2 Missionary Baptist Church. Her civic affiliations include; Board member of the East District Women Convention; Retired Teachers Association and Alabama Education Association.

Ethel McKellar Williams Mahorn departed this life on June 14, 2006 at home. She

leaves to cherish her memories three daughters, Eleanor Williams-Warren, Montgomery, Alabama, Leanna Williams-Allen, Prince George, MD and Ann Williams-Howard, Sardis, Alabama, nineteen (19) grandchildren and eighteen (18) great grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, church family, Mt. Olive #2 Missionary Baptist Church and neighbors of Sunshine Village.

The Funeral will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006, 11:00am, at Mt. Olive #2 Missionary Baptist Church, 6827 Hwy 41,

Sardis, Alabama.

Pastor E.D. Jones, will be officiating.

Rosa (Rhoda) Rose Clay

Rosa (Rhoda) Rose Clay, of Selma, Ala. died on July 13, 2006 in Cleveland, Ohio. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 12:00 noon at Morning Star Baptist Church with Rev. Booker T. Booker officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Memory Gardens with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include: one son, Owen David Rose (Doris), Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Georgia Minnie Mauldin (McDonald), Cleveland, Ohio; two nieces she raised as her own, Gwendolyn Johnson and Evelyn Johnson, Dayton, Ohio; two grandchildren, Tynomie Moss (Darryl) and Kimberly Mack both of Cleveland, Ohio. Four great grandchildren. Great niece Beverly Chappell (Vernon), Cleveland Ohio and a host of, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Rosa Clay was married to Rev. James Clay who preceded her in death. She was a member of the Missionary Society, Nurses Guild, and Choir at Morning Star Baptist Church. She was also a Sunday School Scholar. Rosa worked in the Nursing Field at Burwell Hospital and Nursing Home. She also worked with preschool age children at the Henry James Day Care Center where she retired. Affectionately known as “Aunt Little” by her nieces and nephews, Mrs. Clay will always be remembered by the lives she touched.
