Seeing a decade-old dream become a reality made for an exciting morning Wednesday as the city of Selma Board of Education held a ribbon cutting and open house at its new facility.

Elected officials, as well as members of the business community and some local students got a first-hand look at the 8,500 square foot building, which will house 20 to 25 employees of the school system.

“It’s exciting. To see this become a reality is a dream come true,” said Dr. James Carter, superintendent of the city school system. “It’s a great facility for the public to transact school system business. One thing we’ve done is make it accessible to everybody.”

The facility is located on Broad Street in front of Selma High School.

It was built at a cost of $1 million, obtained by floating a bond issue.

The building was not built to be a showplace, but a place where employees and the public could conduct school business in a nice, functional facility.

The old school board offices will be used for training and as a warehouse.

School system employees will begin moving this Friday and plans are to have the building “open for business” Monday morning.

There are a lot of people who deserve credit for bringing this project to completion.

As with the new YMCA in Selma, there are great things happening throughout the city that local residents can be proud of.

The new Selma City Schools main office is one more example of how vision, combined with cooperation, brings about progress.
