Donald LeRoy Johnson
Donald LeRoy Johnson died Friday, June 30 in a local nursing home.
His funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 2, in old Live Oak Cemetery with the Rev. George Sedberry officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.
Born May 23, 1916 in Troy, Idaho, he was the eighth child of John Henry Johnson and Julia Olson Johnson. He graduated from Troy High School, where he was outstanding in athletics and made Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” by winning a track meet single-handedly. He entered the University of Idaho, where he was a finalist in the Olympics in his sport, the Javelin. He graduated in 1939 and taught school and coached in Haley, Idaho, before entering the Army Air Force in 1940.
During his military service Johnson was stationed at Craig Air Force Base, where he was Communications Officer. He and Jean Maas of Selma were married on June 27, 1942 and after serving at several Air Force bases they returned to Selma in 1945. He remained active in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Johnson was employed at South Central Bell for 30 years. He was a longtime member of Church Street United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Johnson of Selma; two sons, Philip L. Johnson (and his wife Vaughan) of Selma, and Donald M. Johnson (and his wife Marty) of Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren: Neil Johnson, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Brian Johnson (Kara) of Wilmington, N.C.; Philip Johnson Jr. (Paula) and Kirk Johnson (Meredith) Birmingham; Vaughan Bolen (Hunter), Demopolis; and David Johnson of Auburn.
Other survivors are his three great-grandchildren: Emma Johnson and Cameron Johnson, Wilmington, N.C., and Claire Johnson, Birmingham; his brother, Merle D. Johnson (Connie) of Gearhart, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Neil Johnson, Brian Johnson, Philip Johnson Jr., Kirk Johnson, David Johnson, Hunter Bolen, Sam Kirkpatrick and Graham Kirkpatrick.
John W. Howard
Mr. John W. Howard, age 72, of Linden, Alabama, passed June 29, 2006 in Jefferson, Alabama.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 3, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Franks Chapel A.M.E. Church, Linden, Alabama. Rev. Jessie Rivers will officiate. Interment will follow in Scott Memorial Cemetery, Jefferson, Alabama.

“Sonny” Edwards
Rev. W.N. “Sonny” Edwards, 70, of Selma died Saturday, July 01, 2006 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at Pisgah Baptist Church on Monday, July 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Robert Taylor, Rev. Henry Levert, and Rev. Wesly Wilkerson officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Rev. Edwards is survived by his wife Betty J. Edwards of 52 years; son, Neil (BJ) Edwards; daughter, Susan E. (David) Wilkerson; two grandchildren, Susanne Wilkerson and Rev. Wesly Wilkerson; Brothers, John R. (Ann) Edwards, James (Bobbie) Edwards, Mike (Charlette) Edwards, and Houston (Judi) Edwards; sister, Mary Ruth (Harvey) Holley; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Rev. Edwards was preceded in death by his parents, W.D. and Ruth Edwards; and his sister, Doris Zimmerman.
Active Pallbearers will be Walter Edwards, Joe Ivey, Harold Edwards, Billy Reed, C.C. Wilkerson, and David Wilkerson.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Cahaba Hospice Inc., 410 Church St., Selma, AL 36701 or Ocmulgee Baptist Church Building Fund, Rt. 6 Box 378, Selma, AL 36701.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2006 at Lawrence Funeral Home.
Susan Stone Myers
Susan Stone Myers, age 52, of Pensacola, FL, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at her home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 1, 2006 at noon at Brownsville Baptist Church, Pensacola, FL. Interment will be on Sunday, July 2, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Marion Cemetery, Marion, AL.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2006 at Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel.
Survivors include two sons, Troy Myers and Paul Myers; one daughter, Haley and her husband Brandon Tucker; one grandson, Brandon Tedder, Jr.; one sister, Carol and her husband Don Ed Tucker; and one niece, Katie Crommelin.
Susan Stone Myers was born on November 2, 1953 in Marion, Alabama.
She loved Pensacola and made it her home for 15 years to raise her three children.
She was a kind loving person and a devoted friend.
She will be dearly missed by all those who knew her.

Robert Alton Calhoun
Robert Alton Calhoun, age 66, of Selma, died July 1, 2006 at his home.
Graveside services will be held at London Baptist Church Cemetery in Castleberry, AL at 11:00 A.M. on Monday July 3, 2006 officiated by Rev Shannon Arnold and directed by Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home.
Mr. Calhoun is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandra Barlow Calhoun of Selma; daughters, Lisa (Ronnie) Piper of Fairhope and Kelly (Charles) Warren of Fairhope; three grandsons, Randall Piper, Ryan Piper, and Chuck Squires all of Fairhope; one great grandchild, Caitlyn Piper of Selma; sister, Pauline Spear of Mississippi; and a brother, Ray (Margaret) Calhoun of Rock Hill, S.C.

Irene Daniels Kirk
Irene Daniels Kirk, 85, died Friday, June 30, 2006 at home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, July 3, 2006 at Orrville Baptist Church with Rev. John McLaren and Rev. Glenn Taylor officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing
Mrs. Kirk is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert W. Kirk, Sr, sons Robert W. Kirk Jr. of Littleton, Co and Raymond E. (Pat) Kirk of Albany, Ga., daughters Betty Fenner of Kissimee, Fla. and Judy (Henry) Twilley of Selma. Grand Children Lisa Haughen of Anniston, Ala.; Joi Clayton of Pine, Co.; Chris Kirk of Atmore, Ala.; Jennifer Kirk of Albany, Ga.; and Meaghan Fenner of Kissimmee, FL; five great grandchildren; and a Brother Gin (Nick) Daniels, of Panama City, FL.
Mrs. Kirk was preceded in death by her father Nicholas Hardy Daniels, mother, Jennie Etta Sheffield, her brothers, Bernard, David, Kossie, Eugene, Percy, and Robert Daniels, her sisters, Edna Pritchett, Ruby Bozeman, and Loretta Turner.
Pallbearers will be Chris Kirk, Blake Kirk, David Haughen, Mark Frasier, Jesse Englett, and Jed Yeager.
Family will receive friends Sunday, July 2, 2006 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at the funeral home.
