An alleged arsonist has been jailed and now faces charges related to several different incidents.

Kelvin Hunter, 33, of Selma was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with two counts of criminal mischief first degree.

Hunter is believed to have been connected with reports of a Union Street residence burned by fire June 10, vehicles damaged by fire reported June 11 and June 12 and a Park Lane residence damaged by fire June 14.

“He is going to get added charges, I know,” Police Chief Jimmy Martin said. “Right now, the investigation is in the preliminary stages, and there’s an unknown type of fuel or fire starter that was used. It’s pretty close to $10,000 in damages or more.”

The charges stemmed from a domestic dispute, so it is likely one of the victims knew Hunter.

Hunter also had outstanding warrants from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, and he was charged as a fugitive.

He was arrested Wednesday at his Tremont Street residence and taken to the Dallas County Jail under $10,000 bond for each charge.

Martin said he was pretty confident Hunter would serve the maximum sentence if convicted.

“These are multiple counts of damage and really malicious types of crime,” Martin said. “I feel like the courts will use the upper end of the guidelines of sentencing on them. We’re talking about 15 to 20 years.”
