Cosby earns VRMC Volunteer of the Year

Anyone who has paid a visit to Vaughan Regional Medical Center (VRMC) knows Harold Cosby, whether they are aware of this fact or not.

A volunteer at the VRMC for 21 years, Cosby was recently awarded the hospital’s Volunteer of the Year Award during a luncheon held at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center. Cosby was pleasantly surprised; not knowing the hospital staff had secretly coordinated the event in her honor.

“I felt honored but I was shocked,” she said. “I had no idea they had planned it.”

Over the years, Cosby has clocked in nearly 4600 hours as a volunteer, manning the hospital gift shop, welcoming patients, and delivering mail and transporting flowers to patients’ rooms. She works one day a week, on Tuesdays from noon to 5 p.m.

However, Cosby happily comes in more than once a week if a fellow volunteer calls in sick.

Cosby has always longed to be a nurse, but her dream was derailed after she suffered a back injury. When Cosby’s physician told her nursing wasn’t in the cards, she opted for the next best thing.

There is no doubt Cosby loves her work and the homey atmosphere.

“I just enjoy working around the hospital and helping people,” she said. “I just hope I can keep going on because this is something I thoroughly enjoy.”

“We make a lot of friends here too. It’s just like a big family.”

Cosby, a former resident of Birmingham moved to Selma in January of 1985. She has one daughter who resides in North Carolina and a son who resides in Hoover, Ala.
