This Saturday, Selma Habitat for Humanity representatives are recruiting Dallas Countians to strap on their trusty tool belts for its 41st home construction project.

Selma Habitat Executive Director Nina J. Capps said she is seeking 50 volunteers for the project – the first home construction for Selma Habitat this year.

“Saturday (June 3) at 8 a.m. the walls go up, so anybody that wants to come out and help is more than appreciated,” she said.

On May 24, Selma Habitat broke ground at 325 Freedom Place near Southside Primary School – the future abode of the Willie Rand family. Capps said the project will take only 3 months if 50 volunteers pitch in.

“Willie can move into his home quickly if we have enough volunteers,” she said.

Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) has over 1,550 affiliate organizations worldwide. HFHI’s mission is to “eliminate poverty housing and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.”

Statistics show some 2 billion people worldwide – 5.1 million of which are American families – live in poverty housing and more than 1 billion live in urban slums.

These figures are expected

to double by the year 2030. At the end of last year, more than 1 million people worldwide will reside in HFHI homes.

Selma Habitat president Ashley Davis said the organization has raised $12,000 for the Rand home project thus far with the help of countless sponsors.
