William Goode Hudson Jr.

Funeral services for William Goode Hudson Jr, who died Sunday, April 30, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Selma. The Rev. Polk Van Zandt will officiate and Quentin Lane of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Birmingham, will be organist.

Hudson was born July 4, 1922 in Birmingham. He graduated from Ramsay High School and from Birmingham-Southern College, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, serving as its president.

In 1943 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, serving in the South Pacific. Wounded twice, he received a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and two Purple Heart medals. He was promoted to the rank of captain. His last year of service was spent in a military hospital recovering was injuries received on Okinawa.

After his release from service Hudson returned to Birmingham and on July 4, 1946, he married Lois Jennings, also of Birmingham. He was a founding member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a member of the Vestry, three times Senior Warden, a Sunday school teacher and a Boy Scout Leader for the church.

He was also a member of the Board of the National Arthritis Foundation, serving as President of the Alabama Foundation.

Until 1984 the Hudsons lived in Birmingham where he was a Regional Vice President for St. Paul’s Insurance Corporation, retiring as Alabama Manager of the corporation. Then, following his lifelong plans, the Hudsons moved to the family home in Summerfield and restored it.

In Summerfield Hudson was a volunteer with the Fire Department, the Summerfield Memorial Association, which was begun by his father in 1950 to raise funds for the Methodist Church and Childers Chapel Cemetery. He worked tirelessly to assure the success of the annual Homecoming of the historic church, which will take place today. He also assumed an active role in the community, civic and religious life of Selma. At St. Paul’s Episcopal Church he served on the Vestry, as Senior Warden, at the Food Pantry and with Meals on Wheels. He tutored at Byrd and Kinston elementary schools and at The Old Depot Museum he was a director and an active board member.

Survivors of William Goode Hudson Jr. are: his wife Lois “Sissy” Hudson of Summerfield; his daughter Laura Lois Hudson and her husband Rob Sims of Portland, Oregon; his son William Goode Hudson III and his wife Cheryl of Tifton, Georgia; his son Henry Lee Hudson and his wife Mary Beth of Little Rock, Arkansas; and his daughter Julie Tate Hudson of Santa Fe, New Mexico; 10 grandchildren and a number of other relatives.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Selma/Dallas County Public Library, the Selma Animal Shelter or a charity of choice.

Benjamin Marks

Benjamin Marks, age 51, of Selma, Alabama died on Friday, April 28, 2006 at home.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Lewis Brothers Chapel with Herbert Allen officiating and Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include: mother, Linda Marks Ford; son, Derrick Smiley; brothers, Kurk Marks, Sr., Joe Marks, Thomas Ford, Jr., Ricky Ford, James Ford, Barry Ford, Sr., Benjamin J. Marks, Terry Beer; sisters, Shelia Marks Daniel, Debbie A. Marks Lakes, Celestine Ford Walker, Jr.

Christopher Columbus Bettis

Christopher Columbus Bettis, age 93, of Selma, Alabama died on May 1, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Miller Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Ella Green Douglas officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Service directing.

Survivors include: one son, Calvin Steele Bettis; three daughters, Barbara Jones, Beverly (Ovella) Goings and Ella Green Douglas; eight grandchildren, forty-five great grandchildren; one sister-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Larnetta Graham Smelley McGinnis, age 81, of Selma, Alabama died on April 29, 2006 at Warren Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services and survivors will be announced at a later date by Miller Funeral Service.
