In baseball, the regional playoffs begin this weekend. The way the AISA playoffs are set up, team play a doubleheader on the first day and then an “if necessary” game on the second day. The four winners in all three classes will come together at Bloch Park on May 9-13 to determine a new set of state champions.

In the Queen City, Morgan will face Mobile Christian on campus at 2 p.m., with the second game to follow.

This is a rematch from last year’s Morgan victory on the road at Mobile Christian.

A majority of the playoffs, however, will begin on Wednesday.

Locally, Meadowview Christian will face Escambia Academy in a Class AA rematch from a year ago. Last season, the squad from Canoe made the road trip and eliminated the Trojans from play after a pair of one-run victories.

Their meeting this year is set for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The “if necessary” game will be played Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Lowndes Academy, which came on strong during regional play, plays host to its rival, Crenshaw Christian, in Lowndesboro Wednesday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. Game three will be played on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Wilcox Academy, who also made a run to finish second in the region, will travel to Harpersville on Wednesday to face Coosa Valley Academy. The doubleheader will be played on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. The “if necessary” game will be played the next day. The time has yet to be set.

Central Christian, under first-year coach Johnny Raybon, will travel to Sumter Academy on Wednesday. The first game will be played at 3:30 p.m. On Thursday, the “if necessary” game will be set for 3:30 p.m. as well.

The four regional winners will then be seeded and will play in a double-elimination tournament at Selma’s Bloch Park to crown a new AISA state champion in each class.

Currently, the defending state champions are Shelby Academy in Class A, Patrician Academy in Class AA and Glenwood School in Class AAA.

As for the AISA softball tournament, it will be held May 5-6 at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park.

Lowndes Academy and Meadowview Christian have earned berths into the tournament. The bracket, however, has yet to be set for the double-elimination tournament.
