Selma city leaders appear to have learned some lessons from the outcry of its citizenry.

At least the Selma Crime Task Force is taking its role seriously. The Task Force was introduced to the public during a meeting April 3 at which citizens were encouraged to discuss the problem of crime, as well as possible solutions.

There’s a lot that residents could criticize about the crime problems in Selma. A woman mugged while placing flowers on a grave. Another woman attacked while leaving a hair salon.

We still have an unsolved rape that has a lot of residents concerned about safety in the Bloch Park area.

But, there’s a lot of reasons to feel optimistic as well.

Arrests have been made in purse snatchings, as well as the Girl Scout money grab.

Members of this Crime Task Force have shown their commitment to reducing crime by investigating some of the information obtained through the April 3 public meeting.

Another public meeting will be held at a date to be determined.

Once the time and place is announced, make plans to attend if you possibly can.

Crime affects both white and black citizens. The Task Force members needs to have a good representation from the community at the next town hall meeting.

It’s important to come to the meeting with suggestions and possible plans of action.

What are we as a community willing to do to attack these problems and find a solution?

The April 3 meeting was a good first step.
