There are a number of issues that voters will decide this year and one such vote comes up this month.

On April 25, voters will be asked to renew a 7.4 mills school tax that will generate $1.4 million annually for Selma City Schools.

Elected officials are supporting the tax, but ultimately, it is up to the voters to approve it.

It is important to realize that this isn’t a new tax.

It is a renewal of a tax that provides needed revenue to maintain school system

programs and operations.

The tax was first passed in 1954 and was last renewed in 1976.

This tax revenue is the major way citizens of Selma provide local support to Selma City Schools.

Don’t let the word “tax”

keep you from supporting this renewal.

Some people will vote “no” whenever they see the word “tax” on a ballot.

But this is a tax that is already in place and that is a necessity in the efforts to provide dollars for education.

It is perhaps even more important to know what will happen if the tax isn’t approved.

If that happens, the school system will lose a lot of its programs, or at the least, many of its special programs will lose funding.

We all want the best schools for our children.

In order to have that, we have to be willing to provide the funding necessary to keep these special programs in place.

We can’t rely on the state of Alabama to support these programs in our local school system.

It is up to our community to support its schools.
