A grand jury indicted James &8220;Jamie&8221; Harvell of Valley Grande on murder charges Friday.
Harvell, 17, was arrested and charged with the shooting death of his 15-year-old brother, Justin.
Jaime remains in the Dallas County Jail where he is awaiting his arraignment date, said District Attorney Michael Jackson.
According to reports, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Harvell residence on County Road 848 on Nov. 25. Shortly after their arrival, deputies discovered Justin lying on his back in the kitchen. A single gunshot wound was visible on Justin’s upper right shoulder.
Capt. Roy Freine testified that he found Jaime suffering from apparent hyperventilation following the shooting. He was transported by ambulance to Four Rivers Medical Center.
Jamie later told his father, Danny, he accidentally shot his brother, saying he was walking out the front door to go hunting when Justin called out his name.
After speaking with Freine and Safetynet Academy representative Emma Stacey Peeples, Jaime confessed that he was arguing with Justin over chewing tobacco. Jamie stated that he removed a 22-caliber rifle from the gun cabinet, stood on the coffee table, pointed the rifle at Justin and pulled the trigger.
Justin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jackson said the district attorney’s office will continue to hold criminals responsible for their actions.
