support for our community

Most of us, if asked, would say we believe in the power of prayer.

Some of us pray on a regular basis – good times and bad.

Others may reserve a silent prayer under our breath asking for safety while traveling.

Still others pray at the bedside of a loved one who is sick, or dying. Or we pray when we’re going through a particularly tough time.

The point is that in most cases, prayer makes us feel better about the situation, whatever it may be.

And few of us could argue the fact that our city could use the prayers of its residents.

At a recent Selma City Council meeting, Council President George Evans introduced a blue and white yard sign that reads:

“This house is praying for

our community.

I Peter 3:8-9.

Unity

Harmony

Blessings”

There is nothing political in the statement. It is non-partisan and speaks to the very soul of our community.

Evans, unfortunately, did not receive a lot of support from his fellow council members when he introduced the signs.

(By the way, I Peter 3:8-9 reads, “Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called – that you might inherit a blessing.”)

Whether or not you want to place one of these signs in your yard is your own business.

But, Evans should be commended for seeing this declaration of community support in another town, and bringing the idea back to Selma.

His intention appears to be simply to make an attempt to bring the community together.

The signs are available locally and some local residents have voiced their support of the project. We hope others will join in, if not by placing a sign in your yard, at least by supporting the spirit of the action.
