Two local high school students remain in the hospital following an accident that occurred at about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 80 and County Road 44, officials said.

Clayton Dumas, 18, a student at Wilcox Academy, was driving northwest on County Road 44 and “failed to stop at the stop sign,” said State Trooper John Reese.

Dumas’ vehicle was struck by Veronica Ellis, who was driving westbound on Highway 80 in a Chevrolet van owned by The Selma Times-Journal.

Dumas and Ellis, along with three passengers in Dumas’ vehicle – Patrick Chase Felts, Alston Alsbrook and William Summerlin –

“were

transported to the hospital,” Reese said.

Ellis was treated at Vaughan Regional Medical Center and released.

Reese said Dumas was also transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, where he remained as of Thursday afternoon. Alsbrook was transferred to UAB. Summerlin and Felts were treated and released, officials said. Reese said the case is still under investigation.

Felts is a student at Wilcox Academy, while Alsbrook and Summerlin attend Morgan Academy.
