Jean Cosby

Jean Cosby died Thursday March 2, 2006, in a local nursing home. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March

4 in Houston Park Church of Christ with the Rev. Bob Wagner officiating. Burial will be in old Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Lawrence Funeral Home.

Miss Cosby was born Feb. 25, 1922 in Selma.

She was a graduate of the Selma Public School System, David Lipscomb College in Nashville and the University of Alabama, with a major in Early Childhood Development.

After returning to Selma she entered the family business as co-owner of Cosby-Carmichael Inc.

And, as the fourth generation resident in the family home on Broad Street, she took pride in maintaining it in pristine condition.

Active in civic and community affairs, Miss Cosby had a special interest in city beautification, the Historic Pilgrimage, Tale Tellin’ Festival and other local historic projects.

She taught Sunday school at Houston Park Church of Christ for 50 years, also participating in other church activities.

Her parents, Annie and C. Pierson Cosby and her brother-in-law and business partner Ken Carmichael preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sister, Martha Cosby Carmichael; three nieces: Shelby Carmichael High of Selma, Judith Carmichael O’Connor (Robert) of Columbiana, Martha Jean Carmichael Pierce (Kent) of Gainesville, Fla.; and two nephews, Cosby Carmichael (Marsha) and James K. Carmichael of Tuscaloosa.

Other survivors include four great-nieces and eight great-nephews and a number of other relatives.

Pallbearers will be her great-nephews:

W. James High III, Robert A. High, H. Kendrick Carmichael, Pierson S. Carmichael, R. Clay Carmichael,

Joseph Pierce and William A. O’Connor.

Memorial gifts may be made to Houston Park Church of Christ Inner City Ministry, which is focused on help for children of low-income families, or a charity of choice.

Sammie Mae Jackson

Sammie Mae Jackson, age 56, of Selma, Alabama died on February 22, 2006 at Princeton Baptist Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.

Funeral services are scheduled for March 4, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Lily Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Adolph Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Lily Grove Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Survivors include father, Shelley Rattler, Sr; two sons, John (Felecia) Jackson, Jr. and Michael Jackson both of Selma, AL; five daughters, Shirley Rattler, Rosie (Lloyd) Dennis, Linda (Walter) McGary and Regina (Larry) McGary all of Selma, AL, Mary (Melvin) Brown of Autaugaville, AL; three brothers, Shelley (Ardenia) Rattler and James Rattler both of Selma, AL, Willie James (Carrie) Venter of Chattanooga, TN; two sisters, Addie Watkins of Selma, AL and Carolyn Carter of Brookeville, FL; fourteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; four sons-in-laws; one daughter-in-law; four brothers-in-laws; six sisters-in-laws; three nephews and four nieces.

Calvin Norris Roberts

Calvin Norris Roberts (Pappi), age 63, of Selma, and long time resident of Dayton and Springfield, OH, passed away March 2, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 4, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Boyce Teas officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing. Interment will be in New Live Oak Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, March 3, 2006, 6-8:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home.

He is survived by two daughters, Holly (Andrew) Ortman of Columbus, GA and Shelly Altman of Fort Pierce, FL; one brother, Woodrow Roberts of Hendersonville, TN; three sisters, Faye Jett, Henrietta Teas and Mary DuFour; and four grandchildren, Victoria, Hannah, A.J. and Abigail.

Pallbearers will be James Robinson, Crag Mott, James Manderson, Kenny Jett, Tim Teas and Mark Crouse.

Mr. Roberts was a member of the VFW.

He also enjoyed disc jockeying for weddings and parties.

He loved horses, collecting old cars and being outside.

He enjoyed time spent out on the porch watching his grandchildren play.

Linda Ruth Carter

Linda Ruth Carter, 44, of Hayneville, AL died on February 22,2006.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday March 1, 2006 at 12:00 noon at the Bell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Willie Broadnax officiating and Bell Funeral Home directing.

Ernest Lee

Mr. Ernest Lee of Fort Wayne, Indiana died on February 24, 2006 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Funeral services and survivors will be announced at a later date by Miller Funeral Service.

Saul Garner, Sr.

Mr. Saul Garner, Sr., age 77, of Demopolis, Alabama passed away on February 28, 2006 at his residence.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, March 5, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Demopolis, Alabama. Rev. Henry Thompson, Eulogist. Interment will follow in Friendship Cemetery, Demopolis, Alabama.

The remains will repose at the church on Sunday beginning at 12:30 P.M.

Louise Perdue, 88, of Fort Deposit, AL died on February 21, 2006.

Freddie M. Williams

Freddie M. Williams, age 55, of Orrville, Alabama died on March 1, 2006 at Warren Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be on March 5, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, Orrville with Dwight Wood Officiating. Burial will follow in First Baptist Church cemetery directed by Lewis Brothers Funeral Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Jacqueline Young; seven brothers; seven sisters, and two grandchildren.

Mary Collins, age 70, of Selma, AL died on March 1, 2006 at South Haven Nursing Home.

Mary E. Harrison

Mary E. Harrison, 65, of Letohatchee, AL died on February 28, 2006.

Funeral and survivors will be announced at a later date by Bell Funeral Home.

Lucille Hill

Lucille Hill, age 49, of Selma, Alabama died on February 24, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on March 5, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Beach Island Baptist Church with Rev. C. A. Heard officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Garden directed by Lewis Brothers Funeral Home.

Survivors include her mother, Lucy M. Hill; five brothers, Timothy Hill, Lorenzo Hill, Gentle Hill Jr., Gary Hill and Christopher B. Hill; four sister, Sarah Braxter, Lucy M. Cleveland, Louise Y. Johnson and Patricia A. Hill; one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, fourteen nephews, six nieces, twenty-seven great-nephews and nieces and two aunts.

Pallbearers will be her nephews.

Leslie N. Knott

Mr. Leslie N. Knott, age 89, of Demopolis, Alabama, formerly of Boligee, Alabama passed away on February 20, 2006 at St. Mary’s Nursing Home in St. Claires Shores, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Larkin & Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Demopolis, Alabama. Elder Maurice Lee, Eulogist. Interment will follow in Knott Cemetery in Boligee, Alabama.

Melanie Jackson

Melanie Jackson, 40, of Montgomery, AL died on February 23, 2006.

Funeral will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 11:00am at Southside Church of Christ, 3388 S. Hull Street, Montgomery, Al.

Viewing will be from 8:00 am to 11:00 am on March 4, also at the Southside Church of Christ. Brother Herman Wesley will be officiating and Bell Funeral Home directing.

Following the internment, dinner will be served at the North Pointe Church of Christ, 3172 Mobile Highway, Montgomery, AL.

Rushell McElroy

Mr. Rushell McElroy, age 78, of Orrville, Alabama died on February 27, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for March 4, 2006 at 12:00 noon at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Orrville, Alabama with Rev. J. M. McQueen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Mr. McElroy is survived by his wife Mable McElroy.

Gloria Turner

Gloria Turner, age 45, of Marion Junction, Alabama died on March 2, 2006 at her home.

Funeral services and survivors will be announced at a later date by Miller Funeral Service.

Margo Lee

Margo Lee, age 48, died on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 in Selma, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held on March 4, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Sunny Acre Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Elmwood directed by Lewis Brothers Funeral Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia Lee of Montgomery, AL; three brothers, Arbee Lee of Boston, MA, Robert Lee and Glen Lee both of Selma, AL; five grandchildren, Devarious Lee, Tyniqua Lee, Gregory Lee, Rakai’ya and Sa’mya Lee all of Montgomery, AL; seven nephews; three nieces; a grandmother, Hester Lee Glover of Cleveland, OH; six aunts, two uncles and a host of great nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers will be the men of the family.

George Harrison

Mr. George Harrison, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, formerly of Gallion, Alabama passed away on February 24, 2006 at D.C.H. Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 12:00 noon at St. Paul Baptist Church, Highway 69, Gallion, Alabama. Rev. Kelvin Robertson, Pastor and Rev. Ulysses Lewis, Eulogist. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Demopolis, Alabama.

The remains will repose at the church on Saturday beginning at 11:00 A.M.
