Dr. James Allan Street

Dr. James Allan Street, 72, died Sunday, February 5, 2006 after a brief illness.

Dr. Street was Superintendent of the Bristol Tennessee City Schools from 1990 – 95 when health conditions brought on his retirement. He had served as board member and President of the Rotary Club of Bristol VA – TN, Board member and Secretary of the Bristol United Way, and Chairman of Keep Bristol Beautiful.

He was a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.

He was born March 3, 1933, in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Woodlawn High School.

He served in the U. S. Marine Air Corps during the Korean conflict and was assigned to Fighter Squadron VMF 541 and VMF(N) 533

He married his high school sweetheart, Gladys Lillian Kennedy of Birmingham on August 2, 1952.

He received his bachelor degree from Howard College (now Samford University), master’s degree from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Ed.S. from the University of Montevallo and his doctor of education at Auburn University.

He also attended the University of Alabama and University of Georgia on National Science Foundation Fellowships.

Dr. Street began his career in education as a high school teacher/coach in Perry, FL before moving to Cordele, GA.

In 1960 he went to Sheffield, AL as teacher/coach where he also served as Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor during his tenure there.

In 1966 he went to Selma, AL as Principal of Albert G. Parrish High School and served as Principal – Director of Secondary Education when two high schools were merged into one, Selma High School.

In 1975 Dr. Street became the first full time Executive Director of the newly formed Alabama Council for School Administration and Supervision (ACSAS), an organization representing all school superintendents, principals, and supervisors in public education, a position he held for eleven years.

Today ACSAS is the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS). CLAS presents the Dr. James A. Street Award to a person, persons, institution, or organization for exceptional service or achievement for the cause of public education and in the interests of school administrators in the state of Alabama.

He then served as Superintendent of Schools in Tallassee, AL until accepting the position in Bristol.

Dr. Street received numerous awards for his commitment and dedication to public education, including Samford University’s Outstanding Administrator “Golden Apple” Award and the Outstanding Leadership Award from the University of Montevallo.

He was recognized by the National

Association of Executives with their Distinguished Service Award.

The National Association of Secondary Schools Principals presented him their prestigious Distinguished Service Award and he received the Award of Honor from the National School Public Relations Association.

During his tenure in Tennessee he was recognized

for Outstanding Service by the Superintendent’s Study Council and by the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents.

In 1989 he was inducted into the Alabama Educational Leadership Hall of Fame housed on the campus of Troy State University.

Dr. Street was a member of First Baptist Church, Bristol, VA, where he served as a Deacon, chairman of the Board of Administration and Chairman of the Deacon Board. He worked on numerous committees and other positions of service in the church

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gladys Lillian Kennedy Street, son, Randy Allan Street and wife, Debbie, of Dothan, AL; daughter Cathy Elaine Street Davis and husband, Jay, of Valley Grande, AL; son Steven Lloyd Street and wife Diana, of Gordo, AL; sister, Susan Elaine Marsh, brother, Lloyd Bradley Marsh and wife, Susan, all of Birmingham, AL.

Grandchildren;

Jennifer Elana Street Holland and husband, Chris Holland; James Patrick Street; Hailey Elaine Davis; Katie Elizabeth Davis, RiLee Morgan Street, and Great-Granddaughter, Emma Kay Holland and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Street was preceded in death by his parents, Doris B. and Lloyd Marsh, and Grandmother Ocie Bryant and Lindsey Danielle Street, granddaughter.

The family will receive friends Saturday, February 11, 2006 from 12:00 – 1:00 at Ridout’s Roebuck Chapel in Birmingham.

Funeral services will follow with Dr. Ron Wilson, Samford University, officiating.

The committal service and burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James Patrick Street, Christopher Holland, Jacob Marsh, Jordan Marsh, Sherman Stewart, and Greg Gibson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, Bristol, VA; the American Heart Association; the Rotary Foundation through the local Rotary Club; Bristol Tennessee Schools Foundation.
