Charlie York Brock, Jr.

Charlie York Brock, Jr., 86, died on January 28, 2006.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2006, 1:00 P.M. at Northern Heights Presbyterian Church with Rev. Glen King, Sr. officiating. Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Charlie York Brock, Jr.

was born January 9, 1920 to Charlie and Etta Brock in Selma, Alabama. He grew up in Selma, Alabama and attended know Academy until he was enlisted in the military. Mr. Brock served in the U.S. army in World War II in England and in New Guinea.

Mr. Brock returned home safely from war to marry his sweetheart Lucy Woodson Brock (January 5, 1927 – November 12, 1999). They were married on July 9, 1945 in Selma, Alabama.

Charlie Brock was a faithful worker for many years when he returned to the States. He served for many years at the Jackson Clothing Store and the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He continued to work well beyond his retirement for the City of Selma.

Charlie Brock enjoyed many years singing in the choir and serving as the Sunday School Superintendent at the Northern Heights Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brock had a charming and witty personality and generally well liked by all that knew him. Charlie Brock was a faithful member of Temple 919-Pride of Alabama Elks.

Mr. Brock is survived by his two lovely daughters, Marva Elaine Brock and Margaret Ann Brock (Selma, Alabama); one son, Carver Leon Clinton (San Jose, California); three grandchildren, D. Leon Clinton, Tobi Carver Clinton (San Jose, California) and Mrs. Cheryl Clinton Raphael ( Pleasant Hill, California); two great grandchildren, Brandon Raphael (Pleasant Hill, California) and Kayla Clinton (San Jose, California); three sisters, Bernice Walker (Queens, New York), Mary Williamson (Los Angeles, California) and Lucille Smith (Selma, Alabama); and a host of nieces and nephews.

Charles Edward Johnson

Charles Edward Johnson, 58, of Boston, Mass. (formerly of Selma, AL) died January 31, 2006 in Boston, Mass.

Services are scheduled for February 8, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church with Dr. L. L. Ruffin officiating. Burial in Elmwood directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Survivors include mother, Marie J. Kemp; one daughter, Darlene (Anthony) Chase of Boston, Mass; one God-daughter, Tina Coleman; two brothers, Jesse Johnson of Florida and Roy (Johnnie Mae) Johnson of Boston, Mass.; three sisters, Willie Mae Bradley, Ann C. (Frank) King of Selma, AL and Juanita Johnson of Boston, Mass; one son-in-law, one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Chase, Robert Crum Jr., Henry Allen and Willie Maxey.

Nell McDuffie Curry

Nell McDuffie Curry, a lifelong resident of Camden, Alabama, Nell McDuffie “Sister” Curry died on February 5, 2006 at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Nell Jones Curry Corte, brother Hunter McDuffie and parents Bessie Matthews McDuffie Cobb and Hunter McDuffie.

She is survived by her husband William Vaiden “Pete” Curry, con William Vaiden Curry Jr. (Sommer) and two grandsons Julio Corte IV and William Curry III.

Mrs. Curry was recognized as a tireless volunteer for many civic and statewide charitable organizations.

She attended Huntington College and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1963. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.

She taught the first grade at UMS in Mobile, Alabama and later helped establish the Kindergarten program at Wilcox Academy in Camden, Alabama.

She was active in the Wilcox County Historical Society, the American Cancer Society, Alabama Girls State and the Camden United Methodist Church.

Funeral services are scheduled for February 7, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Camden United Methodist Church. Funeral directed by Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may e made to the Camden United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Sara Virginia

Farish Hughey

Sara Virginia Farish Hughey, age 72, died Sunday, February 5, 2006 in a Bessemer hospital.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at Orrville cemetery officiated by Rev. Walter Albritton and directed by Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hughey was the child of the late Floyd and Ida Farish.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Farish Chisolm.

She is survived

by three children, Sheri (Jimmy) Friday of Orrville, Gerald (Susan) Hughey of Selma, and Mary Carolyn Hughey of New Hampshire; four grandchildren, Trent and Kyle Friday, Nickki Ousley and Zachery Hughey; one great grandchild, Witt Ousley and numerous nieces and nephews.

James Purdie

James Purdie, 82, died on Friday, February 3, 2006.

Funeral services and survivors will be announced at a later date by Lewis Brothers Funeral Home.

Jacqueline McGhee Smith

Jacqueline McGhee Smith, 58, died on Monday, February 6, 2006.
