Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Pettus Street at approximately 1 a.m. on a call concerning a suspicious person, according to reports.

Police were able to identify Nelson, a Selma native, following a brief field interview. He was booked, processed and transported to the Dallas County Jail. Nelson’s bond is set at $250,000.

Police have been searching for Nelson since Norwood, also 19, was found dead on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Minter Avenue Jan. 2. Norwood was shot once in the back. Nelson had been hiding out in Montgomery prior to his arrest.

“We’ll let the courts and the system handle it from here,” Martin said.

Norwood was remembered during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. March on Jan. 16. The theme of the march was “Peace in the Streets.”

Anna Norwood, a relative of the victim, spoke to marchers and continued to mourn the loss.

“He was an innocent victim,” she said. “Wrong place … wrong time.”
