To the Editor:

Obviously at Monday’s City Council meeting, I erred in my reporting of a conversation with Becky Nichols, public library director. Although it is true that the library, even with its present scarcity of funds, is managing, no institution can continue to take from “Peter to pay Paul” and manage successfully.

The truth of the matter is that the back of the library is to the wall, giving us cause to wonder how much longer these conditions can continue. It is true that certain solutions to the problem are presently under consideration; however, that does not answer the immediate need.

Since the age of five when I began reading, the library has been one of the most important entities of my life. It is also one of the most essential and important institutions in Selma/Dallas County. If my remarks at Monday’s meeting hurt in any way, I am sincerely sorry.

The entire City Council and the community must work together to ensure a solution is found to the present dilemma so that our public library may continue to serve future generations to use and enjoy.
