Huey H. Capps

Huey H. Capps, 83 years old, of Selma died Saturday in an area hospital after suffering complications from a stroke.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 24 at 11:00am at the First Baptist Church, Selma. Interment will be held at the New Live Oak Cemetery immediately afterward.

The family will receive visitation on Monday, January 22 from 5:30-7:00 at the Lawrence Brown Funeral Home.

Born in Homerville, GA in 1922, Capps was stationed at Craig Air force Base in 1940.

A year later he married Selma native Dorothy Whitcomb, his wife of 64 years. He received an honorable discharge from the service in 1945 as a Master Sergeant.

He founded Capps Auto Service which later became Capps Mobile Homes and Furniture which upon its closing in 1998 was the state’s oldest mobile home dealership. At its peak, The dealership had operations in Montgomery, AL; Mobile, AL; Demopolis, AL; Pinehill, AL; Jackson, Al; Monroeville, AL; Camden, AL; and

Ft Walton, FL.

During its years of operations, Capps was the recipient of many outstanding industry awards.

Capps was involved in civic activities as a previous member of the Jaycee’s, Selma Civitan Club and was a founder of the La Ridotta Social Club, serving as its president for two terms.

For years he served as Neighborhood Chairman for fund drives of the American Heart Association, Kidney Foundation, March of Dimes and others. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and a longtime member of the Maverick Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church.

He was well known for visiting the aged, comforting the sick and visiting the forgotten but he was happiest when around family.

To Huey, everyone was family- “he loved his people.”

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Whitcomb Capps, Selma; his children Nina Jean Capps, Selma; Michael Huey Capps, Alexandria, VA; Dr. John Gordon Capps, Vienna, VA; grandchildren: Heather Capps Hoyle, Columbia, South Carolina; Michael Huey Capps, Jr., Mannheim, Germany; Adrianne Capps Veres, Montgomery, AL; John Eric Harper Capps, Vienna, VA; and four great-grandchildren (Four great-grandchildren Savannah Grace Hoyle; Zoe Alena Veres; Addison Marie Hoyle, Michael Huey Capps III)

Survived by two brothers, Jack W. Capps, Denver, Colorado.

Bradley D. Capps, Selma, Alabama and two sisters Charlotte Capps Milton; Sarah Ella Howell.

For two of my dearest friends:

I know that you are both good Christians and love the Lord.

But there is much more in life to help others to know Jesus, then they will want to work for the Lord and also there are lots of things that need to be done here on earth in helping the poor and others.

Here on earth and if you lived a life that other can see…they will realize what we are doing and will also want to help…There is enough for us all ….and God will bless us….
