Jane Edwards said her piece at the year’s first Valley Grande Council meeting Tuesday night – she doesn’t think the city is ready for business delivery licenses.

Edwards, owner of the Country Store off Summerfield Road, said it’s premature for the city to require business owners to purchase the $80 license for vendor deliveries because Valley Grande is a small town. Edwards urged council members to rescind the law.

Mayor Tom Lee and other council members believe rescinding the law &045; which was enacted two and a half years ago &045; would halt the city’s growth.

Lee also added it’s illegal for the city not to try to collect the license fee.

Edwards left the meeting before it adjourned.

In other business

Council members held a planning session on Dec. 27 discussing the construction of the public safety building and additional property sales. Lee said minutes from that meeting are available to the public.

Beautification Advisory Group Chair Patsy Moore said she and other group members will walk and review the land cleared for a walking trail this Saturday. The area designated for the walking trail is near Valley Grande Baptist Church.

Moore also invites any input for this year’s Founder’s Day celebration. The event is scheduled for March.

Community Advisory Group Chair Donald Chandler said he continues to work on establishing a neighborhood watch group in the Quail Ridge subdivision.

Mayor Lee announced the income and expense budget for December 2005. The city made a net income of $7,629.54.

Council members passed the first reading of ordinance 2006-24. Lee said the new ordinance will rescind ordinance 2005-23. The new ordinance states that no permits are required for any home construction under $50,000.
