Sorry, kids. School is back in session.

The sounds of children chattering, teachers instructing and pencils sharpening awakened the halls of Selma City Schools Tuesday &045; the first day back for students following the holiday break.

At Payne Elementary School on Franklin Street, the daily routine continued as normal &045; some students stand in single-file lines making their way to the water fountain while others congregate in the cafeteria for lunch.

Right down the hall from the cafeteria, kindergartners in Mrs. Bender’s class are engaged in their phonics lesson, eagerly shouting out the sounds of letters in the alphabet.

Although the holiday season has come and gone, the holiday spirit has not faded in Vuintella Castophney’s kindergarten class. As soon as her students walked through the door, Castophney said they had some stories to tell.

After stories were shared and Christmas present pictures were exchanged, the kindergarteners shifted their attention to their shapes lesson &045; they had to draw and color eight circles.

The students also reviewed what they have learned thus far.

Five-year-old, Sheniya Stallworth, a student in Castophney’s class, wasn’t the least bit sad about the holiday break ending. When asked if she’s excited about being back at school, she summed it up in one word.

Dallas County Schools resumes classes today.
