Athletes from Dallas County’s trio of county schools gathered inside the lunchroom of Martin Middle School to receive one final piece of hardware for the 2005 football season.

Before the 12 student-athletes were presented their trophies and recognition, they were treated to a steak dinner and words of wisdom from former Selma High School principal and current member of the Alabama State Department of Education member, Donald Jefferson.

But Jefferson’s words weren’t only geared to the student-athletes, he also had words of wisdom for the coaches.

Following Jefferson’s words, the players themselves were then honored for their achievements on the field of athletics.

Coach Eric Hiott started off the presentations. The Dallas County coach presented trophies to Joe Cunningham, Derrick McGhee and Darrius Gutheridge.

Keith coach Harry Crum presented All-County trophies to Ladarrius &8220;Ram&8221; Jones and Leo Vaughn.

Southside coach Chris Raymond rounded out the coaches when he presented awards to Jesse Bell, Kenyatta Coleman, Kevin Row, Fontano Watters, Kendric Fails, Clyde Brown and Jeffery Anderson.

Coleman was selected as the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.

Brown took home the offensive version of that award.

Gutheridge took home the Scholastic Award after having a grade point average of 4.04 and a 29 on the SAT and then Anderson was selected as the 2005 Most Valuable Player.
