In its first ever homecoming game, and in front of a crowd of 800, the Concordia Hornets pounced all over the University of South Alabama Jaguars 68-7.

The Hornets continue to play impressively in its inaugural football season and has improved their record to 4-3 for the year. This game was a team effort as a host of Concordia players figured in the scoring.

The fireworks started on the opening kick-off with South Alabama fumbling the return on their own 28-yard line. On the first play Concordia quarterback Ken Johnson hit wide receiver Edward Sturdivant in the right side of the end zone to give the Hornets a 7-0 advantage after converting the point after in the first 39 seconds of the game. The fireworks continued when the Hornets blocked a Jaguar punt and Tarvie Thomas picked up the football and returned it for a touchdown. Harrison Ellison kicked the extra point to make the score 14-0.

USA capped a 77-yard drive on a 48-yard touchdown pass play to get on the scoreboard. That turned out to be the only score of the game for the Jaguars. Roderick Robinson hit Johnson, who lined up as a receiver, on a 16-yard pass, a leaping grab, to add six more points in the quarter. The first quarter ended at 20-7.

Concordia scored five times in the second quarter. Johnson threw his second touchdown pass.

This time is was a 25-yarder to Eric Taylor. After a South Alabama turnover, Ramlee South scored from five yards out. Robinson threw his second touchdown pass, also after a Jaguar turnover, to Fernandos Edward on a 31-yarder. A high snap of a USA punt attempt allowed Concordia’s Cedric Moore to scoop up the loose ball and scamper 25 yards untouched.

Just before the half, reserve linebacker Peter Westbrook recovered a fumble and dodged his way 90 yards for another Hornet touchdown. The half ended with a 55-7 score.

In the second half, all the Hornets wanted to do was run the clock. However, they managed another touchdown run of 18 yards by Carlton Williams in the third quarter. Quarterback Kenny Padgett reached the end zone in the fourth as he danced eight yards. The final tally was brought to 68-7. The victory also improved the Hornets to 2-0 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

Concordia, 2-1 at home, will host Edward Waters College of Jacksonville, Fla., next Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
